Prof. Joan O. Grimalt was born in Palma, Mallorca, in 1956. He earned his degree in Chemical Engineering from the Institute Qumix de Saria in 1978 and completed his PhD in Chemistry at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1983. Since 1992, he has served as a Research Professor at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and is a full member of the Catalan Academy.
Prof. Grimalt has an extensive scientific record, with over 770 publications that have received more than 35,000 citations (H-index: 94). His work has appeared in leading journals such as Science, Nature, and The Lancet.
He has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Jaume I Award for the Protection of Nature (2005, Generalitat Valenciana), the Award for Scientific Excellence from the Catalan Chemical Society (2022), the Best Research Award of 2022 from the Academy of Medical and Health Sciences of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, and the Narcisa Monturiol Award for excellence in Science and Technology (2024, Generalist de Catalunya).
